Ups and downs

Today seems like a roller coaster ride. It was both a happy and sad day.

President Nathan was coming to have dinner at the hotel today and it was a really busy day.

Usually, there would be about 7 people in the kitchen, but today, there were only about 2 or 3, including me. The others had to bring food up to the restaurant.

And there is this phone in the kitchen that rings ever so frequently. Everyone except Zhang Lan and me knows how to pick it up.

Today, when everyone was so busy, there were only 2 people in the kitchen.

I was so hoping the phone wouldn't ring if not I would have to pick it up, because I didn't know what to say.

But, it happened.

The phone rang.

The other chef was busy, so I had to picked it up.

The person said something, then I didn't know how to reply, so I asked the other chef to come over. He said something, then put the phone down.

A few minutes later, the phone rang again.

I picked it up again.

The person said something about pastry rack, blueberries blah blah blah... I didn't really know what he said, then I said ok and put down the phone. I told what I remembered to the chef, and he was quite confused at what I said.

Then I think he figured out what was the message and asked another chef who just came in to collect the blueberries.

I could tell he was a little angry because I didn't hear the message properly then.

So of course, I was a little depressed. Seems like I can't really do stuff properly like the other more senior chefs. After all, I'm only a trainee. I've only been there for 4 days!

I almost cried then, but of course, I had to control!

I think he sensed that I was disappointed and told me some stuff about how hard working life is, and how I should study hard when I go back to school...

It's true you know. Studying is one hundred times easier than working.

Anyway, that was the sad part of today. Seems like just a small incident, but it made me really sad.

However, the fun part came at the end of the day.

I had the chance to follow another trainee up the the restaurant "Oscar's". We just had to refill whatever that was lacking on the buffet table.

It was an eyeopener. The restaurant was absolutely beautful!

After we went back to the kitchen, I was taught how to make strawberry shartcake!

Woohoo! So fun!

I didn't get to make the entire cake myself because there were some difficult parts that the chef had to do herself.

Still, I had fun! And while cutting the strawberries, I could eat all those that were out of shape. Haha. Yummy!

Today, my shift is 2 to 10pm instead of the usual 1 to 9pm. But, I think working later is more fun. I also don't know why. Maybe it's because things are less hectic at night.

And when the function upstairs ended, there was some leftover food and fruits from the buffet table and I had a good time eating before I left.

All in all, today was another fun day. Although there was an unexpected sad event, it only made me learn how to do things better. At least now I can pick up the calls with more confidence!

haha, i still remember the phone calls i had to pick up at the counter while i was working!! It was like a phone from hell, esp. during the busy period, because i had to be a cashier and answer enquires at times.

Sometimes the customers are so nasty and rude; they would scold me for taking such a long time to pick up the phone (-__-)

I think I got immune to it after a while. After all getting scolded and not living up to expectations are part and parcel of live. haha.

go go!!
Thanks man! Hope you have fun for your job too!
